Maíra is a 15-year-old Black vampire who lives with her mother, Janete, in the outskirts of Salvador. In an attempt to control her daughter’s urges, Janete has never allowed Maíra to come into contact with human blood, raising chickens in the backyard of their home as an alternative source of blood. In an attempt to curb her vampiric desires, Maíra keeps her relationship with her boyfriend, Maurício, chaste—even avoiding kissing him.

As she struggles with the guilt of being unable to follow her nature and the pain of seeing her own mother trapped in an abusive relationship with her stepfather, Maíra is on school break and spends her idle days between meeting up with a few friends and helping her mother with household chores. At night, she usually goes to the evangelical church and then spends some time at her boyfriend’s house, which is nearby. Everything changes when Maíra approaches her first period and her desire to taste human blood grows stronger.
